About Raw Food Recovery: Upscaling Addition To Perfect Health

Raw Recovery is a group of people who meet to form a community of support. We seek to embrace a healthy lifestyle that includes abstinence from substances (drugs, alcohol, food) that harm us, and to nourish ourselves with raw and living foods. Members of other recovery groups around substance and food abuse are welcome to join us.

Raw???
By raw or living food we mean uncooked, unprocessed, predominantly organic fruit, vegetables, seeds, and nuts. Refraining from heating food over 118° F (48° C) preserves its vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients, and enzymes. Do not worry: you will not believe how delicious raw recipes can be. The variety is astounding and there are no unhealthy empty calories in sight!

Vibrant Recovery
We likely share a common background of the pain and shame that comes with addiction and we want a life that is not just about abstaining, but about living joyfully (or at least contentedly, which is a heady goal in itself). Often our addictions have kept us lonely and isolated, and this will be a safe space to jettison the behaviors that have kept us that way. We have given too much of our lives already to unhealthy choices, now its time to enthusiastically become committed to making nothing but healthy ones. This meeting has been organized for likeminded folks to join together on this journey of seeking not just recovery, but energy and vitality! Many of us have a lot of lost time to make up for. We will use this meeting to encourage and support each other in creating healthy, energetic lives.

Principals
Here are some principals we have set down as a guide to raw recovery:

  • A belief that we deserve a healthy, vibrant life;
  • The knowledge that we can change unhealthy behaviors;
  • The certainty that there will never be enough booze, drugs, or food to fill the empty soul;
  • The scientific knowledge that that with practice we can re-wire our neural networks to desire living foods and exercise (rather than craving poisons);
  • A conviction that seeking instant gratification has never served us well, coupled with the desire to work steadily together to find balance and harmony;
  • A notion that we can best succeed in transforming ourselves in community;
  • And confidence that we can reach attain higher levels of mental, emotional, and spiritual health through abstinence from harmful substances, and by nourishing ourselves primarily with raw, whole foods.

Meetings
Meetings will be a structured time for sharing challenges and triumphs in raw recovery. Our agenda will include time for sharing (much like a 12-Step group, with each member having the opportunity to share), discussion, and exchange of ideas. We will conclude with an optional book study discussion group.

Meetings will be 60 minutes long, but may become longer depending on group size and conscience. While we respect our spirituality, our focus will be secular, with an emphasis on practical steps we will take to create and maintain raw recovery.

Activities
As a natural outgrowth of building our community, we hope to see folks going on outings together to farmers markets, to stock up on raw supplies, to have parties and picnics, walks round Greenlake, bicycling, attending Raw NOW events, etc. We may also exchange information about other helpful recovery groups.

p.s. the inability to use quotations marks and apostrophes in this text is frustrating. I know they're missing, but the formatting here somehow will not allow them. Grrr....
